<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This article describes my step-by-step approach to writing an essay for IELTS Writing Task 2. It <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">also appear<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">s on my <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">bl<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">og <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">English-Tutor-Brisbane.blogspot.com. The topic is from Official IELTS Practice Materials.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Many old buildings are protected by law because they are part of a nation’s history. However, some people think old buildings should be knocked down to make way for new ones because people need houses and offices.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">How important is it to maintain old buildings? Should history stand in the way of progress?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 1

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">First, I carefully read the question and highlight / underline the key words.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Many old buildings are protected by law because they are part of a nation’s history. However, some people think old buildings should be knocked down to make way for new ones because people need houses and offices.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">How important is it to maintain old buildings? Should history stand in the way of progress?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then I think about what the question is actually asking. I create a yes-no question so that I can answer it easily.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Should we knock down old buildings to make way for new ones?

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I also look at other words in the question, ones that can give me ideas for my brainstorming. Not all questions will include helpful words, but many do. In this case I make a mental note of or lightly circle/underline the following words:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">law

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">history

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">houses

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">offices

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">progress

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 2

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I make two lists, one for yes and the other for no, and brainstorm my ideas. I make a note of all the ideas I have which could support answers to the yes-no question.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">YES / AGREE

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">need houses - somewhere to live

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">need offices - somewhere to work

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">old buildings = unsafe in an earthquake

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">old buildings = ugly

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">old buildings - remember bad history e.g. prisons, slavery

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">new buildings = practical

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">old buildings = impractical

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">NO / DISAGREE

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">old buildings = beautiful

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">old buildings - remember history

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Melbourne = quaint, pretty, historical

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Brisbane = new, ugly, modern

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">old buildings = tourism

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You can see that some of my ideas are repetitive but at this brainstorming stage this is OK. I will edit my ideas more when it comes to the next step: planning.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When brainstorming, I also think about some of the words I would like to include in my essay. In this one I think I would like to use the following words (in one form or another): <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">cultural heritage

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">elegant

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">historical

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">modern

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">grand

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">timeless

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">architecture

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In addition, I decide that I would like to use the following collocations: <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">timeless elegance,

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">former glory

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">significant contribution

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">structurally unsound

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">By making a note of these words now, I can come back to them when I am planning, writing, or even when I am checking my work.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 3

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Next, I sort my ideas into a plan:
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">INTRODUCTION

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Keep the old buildings

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">BODY PARAGRAPH 1
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">MAIN IDEA 1<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Old buildings are beautiful

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">SUPPORT:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Add to city’s attractions

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Can be refurbished e.g. Shopping arcade in WGN, MEL.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Local people can enjoy them

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Architecture is timeless

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">BODY PARAGRAPH 2
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">MAIN IDEA 2:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Old buildings have historical significance

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">SUPPORT:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Parliament buildings

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Tourist attraction

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Tourists can enjoy them

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">BODY PARAGRAPH 3

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">BALANCE / ACKNOWLEDGE:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Old buildings = unsafe

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">e.g. Earthquakes

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">REFUTE:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Reinforcing

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Just as good as new buildings

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">CONCLUSION

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Keep the old buildings

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My plan would be in more note form than above, but in this case I want you to be able to read and understand it. You can see that Body Paragraph 1 is about aesthetics, whereas Body Paragraph 2 is about history. Both paragraphs main ideas are in agreement that old buildings should be kept.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Body Paragraph 3 mentions an opposing idea, that old buildings might be dangerous. However, this idea is then refuted, taking the reader back to my opinion that old buildings can be kept if they are maintained properly.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 4

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After analysing the question, brainstorming, and planning, it’s now time to write. Here is my essay as I first wrote it:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">A city’s old buildings should be treasured as part of its cultural heritage. Not only are such buildings beautiful but they also have historical significance. They should definitely not be knocked down in the name of so-called “progress”.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">First, old building makes a city look attractive. These grand structures are beautiful to behold and their timeless elegance supersedes all modern architecture. Such buildings often define the city itself, for example, London would not be the same without Big Ben. Even unused old buildings can be refurbished and brought back to their former glory, such as the Old Bank Arcade in Wellington’s CBD.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In addition, old buildings often play an important role in remembering history of a city. They may tell a story of the people who first built the city, historical figures who lived or worked in the building, or those who made significant contributions to the city’s architectural landscape. These types of buildings, such as Parliament House in Brisbane, are not only pretty to look at but are also now touristic attractions.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">It cannot be denied that older buildings may be deemed structurally unsound and therefore may pose a risk to their inhabitants. For example, a natural disaster such as an earthquake. However, with careful reinforcing using modern technology, these buildings can be as safe as their modern counterparts.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In conclusion, old buildings play an important role in a city. These beautiful buildings should be protected by law and carefully preserved as monumental reminders of a city’s history.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Step 5

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now I check my essay and make some minor adjustments. Here is the finished result:

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">A city’s old buildings should be treasured as part of its cultural heritage because not only are such buildings beautiful but they also have historical significance. They should definitely not be knocked down in the name of so-called “progress”.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">First, old buildings make a city look attractive. Such buildings often define the city itself, for example, London would not be the same without Big Ben. Even unused old buildings can be refurbished and brought back to their former glory, such as the Old Bank Arcade in Wellington’s central business district.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">In addition, old buildings often play an important role in remembering the history of a city. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">While checking this essay, I made sure all my subjects and verbs are in agreement. I checked that my pronouns are not too repetitive and that it is clear who or what they refer to. I added because to the first sentence, and wrote CBD in its full form. I added the article, the, to history of a city, and changed touristic to tourist. In addition, I made the topic sentence in Paragraph 3 longer and added do for emphasis in the conclusion.
YES! IELTS offers a Moodle-based virtual learning environment (VLE) consisting of carefully constructed online study activities for IELTS preparation. In tutor-supported IELTS Writing Courses (for Task 2), you will work through your course step-by-step and each time you complete and submit an activity, your tutor will receive an email to alert them of this. Your tutor will then check your answers and if necessary will write back to you with suggestions or corrections specific to your answers. Because the activities are sequential, it's important you complete every activity in the order given. This interactive method means that you can study by yourself to your own timetable, yet you have the ongoing support of a real tutor throughout your learning program. YES! IELTS Self-Study Writing Courses offer the opportunity to continue to improve your IELTS skills. It is recommend they are undertaken after you complete the tutor-support courses, but this is not essential. You can also have your writing checked by a professional IELTS instructor. YES! IELTS Reading Courses offer tips and practice activities for success in IELTS Reading True-False-Not Given, Paragraph Heading Matching, and Multiple Choice Questions. Tish (English Tutor Brisbane)http://www.blogger.com/profile/10648182193174214747noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4002250876848638281.post-33126366974469336522014-06-04T23:39:00.001-07:002014-06-04T23:41:07.490-07:00Writing for IELTS Task 2: A Step-by-Step Method (Short)

by Tish Kirkland (www.yes-ielts.com)

The following describes my step-by-step approach to writing an essay for
IELTS Writing Task 2.

Step 1

First, I carefully read the question and underline the key words.

Then,
I think about what the question is actually asking. If it is an argument type essay, I create a yes-no
question so that I can answer it easily.

Step 2

I
make two columns, one for yes and the other for no, and brainstorm my
ideas to answer my yes-no question.

Some of my ideas may be repeated or somewhat irrlevant, but at this brainstorming
stage this repetition is OK. I will edit my ideas more when it comes
to the next step: planning.

When brainstorming, I also
think about some of the words I would like to include in my essay, such as relevant idioms or collocations. By making a note of these words now, I can come back to them when I am planning, writing, or even when I am checking my work.

Step 3

Next, I sort my ideas into a plan. I plan for 5 paragraphs: an introduction, 3 x body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Body paragraphs 1 and 2 support my opinion and body paragraph 3 offers an alternative viewpoint, but then refutes that.

Step 4

After analysing the question, brainstorming, and planning, it’s now time to write.

Step 5

Finally, I check my essay and make some minor adjustments.

While
checking this essay, I make sure all my apostrophes are in the right
place and my plurals are accurate. I check that my pronouns are not too repetitive and that it is clear who they refer to.

In any rapidly growing city there are old and unnecessary buildings taking up valuable spaces. There is no doubt that these old buildings should be knocked down in order to make room for new buildings that meet the needs of an expanding urban population.

To begin with, we need more space for houses. Old buildings are often in prime real estate locations, which could rather be utilised to create new urban villages and community hubs. For example, the riverside precinct in West End, Brisbane used to be old run-down factories and it has now been transformed into beautiful modern apartments.

We also need more space for offices. Some old buildings take up vast amounts of land in the CBD. These buildings are only one or two stories high and can only host a small number of offices or shops. If these buildings were knocked down, we could build bigger and better office blocks. Attracting more workers to our city would in turn boost our economy.

Some people may say that we can create housing and office space by refurbishing the existing old buildings, rather than knocking them down. However, this is a costly and time-consuming process and does not address the need for more floorspace. In addition, modern buildings can be built to be more energy efficient, they are better for the environment.

The answer to the housing and office space shortage is to get rid of old buildings and construct modern, efficient buildings in their place. Many old buildings are protected by law because they are part of a nation’s history. However, some people think old buildings should be knocked down to make way for new ones because people need houses and offices.

How important is it to maintain old buildings? Should history stand in the way of progress?

Step 1

First I carefully read the question and underline the key words.

Many old buildings are protected by law because they are part of a
nation’s history. However, some people think old buildings should be
knocked down to make way for new ones because people need houses and
offices.

How important is it to maintain old buildings? Should history stand in the way of progress?

Then
I think about what the question is actually asking. I create a yes-no
question so that I can answer it easily. This method works for me.

Step 2

I
make two columns, one for yes and the other for no, and brainstorm my
ideas. I make a note of all the ideas I have which could support answers
to the yes-no question.
stage this repetitions is OK. I will edit my ideas more when it comes
When brainstorming, I also
think about some of the words I would like to include in my essay. In
this one I think I would like to use the following words (in one form or
another):<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> cultural heritage, elegant, historical, modern, grand, timeless, architecture. In addition, I decide that I would like to use the following collocations: <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">timeless elegance, former glory, significant contribution, structurally unsound. By making a note of these words now, I can come back to them when I am planning, writing, or even when I am checking my work.

Step 3
My
plan would be in more note form than above, but in this case I want you
to be able to read and understand it. You can see that Body Paragraph 1
is about aesthetics, whereas Body Paragraph 2 is about history. Both paragraphs main ideas are in agreement that old buildings should be kept.

Body Paragraph 3
mentions an opposing idea, that old buildings might be dangerous.
However, this idea is then refuted, taking the reader back to my opinion
that old buildings can be kept if they are maintained properly.

While
checking this essay, I made sure all my subjects and verbs are in agreement. I checked that my pronouns are not too repetitive and that it is clear who or what they refer to. I added because to the first sentence, and wrote CBD in its full form. I added the article, the, to history of a city, and changed touristic to tourist. In addition, I made the topic sentence in Paragraph 3 longer and added do for emphasis in the conclusion.

by Tish Kirkland (www.yes-ielts.com)

This article describes my step-by-step approach to writing an essay for IELTS Writing Task 2. The topic is from Test 1 of Cambridge IELTS Book 8.

Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the place to learn this. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Step 1

First I carefully read the question and underline the key words.

Some people think that parents should teach children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the place to learn this. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Then I think about what the question is actually asking. I create a yes-no question so that I can answer it easily. This method works for me.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Should parents teach their children how to be good
members of society ?

Step 2

I make two columns, one for yes and the other for no, and brainstorm my ideas. I make a note of all the ideas I have which could support answers to the yes-no question.

You can see that some of my ideas are repetitive (parents are too busy is pretty much the same as parents have no time), but at this brainstorming stage this repetitions is OK. I will edit my ideas more when it comes to the next step: planning.

When brainstorming, I also think about some of the words I would like to include in my essay. In this one I think I would like to use the following words (in one form or another):<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"> provide,
educate, responsibility, imitate, microcosm, influence, values, social, raise,
rear. In addition, I decide that I would like to use the following collocations and idioms: <span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">role
model, first educator, step up, (put responsibility) on the shoulders of, follow
suit, bring up. By making a note of these words now, I can come back to them when I am planning, writing, or even when I am checking my work.

Step 3

Next, I sort my ideas into a plan:
My plan would be in more note form than above, but in this case I want you to be able to read and understand it. You can see that Body Paragraph 1 is about the role of the home, whereas Body Paragraph 2 is about the role of the school. Both paragraphs main ideas are in agreement that parents should take responsibility.

Body Paragraph 3 mentions the opposing idea, that schools should take responsibility. However, this idea is then refuted, taking the reader back to my opinion that it is the parents’ responsibility.
citizens takes a lot of effort. Yet time and time again this responsibility is
unfairly placed on the shoulders of educational institutions, when in fact it
should be the parents who take charge of such a fundamental issue.

must take responsibility for their children’s education regarding social
values. It is the parents whom the child ultimately looks to for guidance and
support, therefore parents should model good behaviour for the child to copy.
Children learn through imitation, and if parents can demonstrate positive
actions, their children will follow suit.

society. At school, children can practice their interactive and social skills
which they have learnt from their parents at home. They will be challenged with
different ways of thinking and a sound base provided at home can help children
develop their own world view, and to realise how they fit into society.

provide their children with socialisation skills. They have to work long hours
in order to support their families and afford things like school fees. In
addition, the children spend a large proportion of their waking hours at
school, which makes school the ideal place for learning all types of skills.
However, it must be acknowledged that although children spend a lot of time at
school, in the end it is home which has the most influence.

While checking this essay, I made sure all my apostrophes are in the right place and my plurals are accurate. I am particularly concerned about making sure parents, parents’, parent’s, children’s, and child’s are all correct. I checked that my pronouns are not too repetitive and that it is clear who they refer to. I changed issue to concern in the Introduction. In Body Paragraph 2, I removed which they have learnt and changed sound base to solid foundation.
